Calling all literature aficionados!
HomeSkooled Gallery and
The Soapbox: Independent Publishing Centerare collaborating for an evening full of literary love! This one-night exhibit will include three participatory activities that focus on the thrills and comforts provided by books.Enter The Soapbox and step into a story writing center. Create and edit a group story on the walls. Inside the comfort of a story tent, don headphones to listen to a “mixtape” of voices, all reading short excerpts from favorite books. Perhaps the most exciting portion of BOOKED! is Naughty Reads, a concept that will surely transport you back to childhood days. In a darkened room, visitors are encouraged to view exhibited art and found object displays with flashlights, similar to our memories of reading secretly under the covers or peeping at unapproved material. Featured artists include Lena Buford, Nicole Donnelly, Lindsey Fyfe, Elizabeth Gonsiorowski, Nathan Long, Joanne Sherrow, & Jesse White.
Finally, themed refreshments will be available; in the spirit of the event, slurp some alphabet soup or “word” cupcakes while soothing yourself from winter with hot toddies or wine. The event is free and open to the public, however donations are gratefully accepted. Visitors are also encouraged to bring copies of zines to be filed and included in The Soapbox’s zine library, as well as to bring book donations for Books Through Bars. Complete event information, including BtB donation details, can be found at www.phillysoapbox.org/booked.
