June: Zinefests, Skillshares, and more!

June is almost here, and The Soapbox has a couple of things on our early summer agenda! As always, we’ll be open for Library browsing and printing first Tuesdays (June 5) from 6-9pm and third Sundays (June 17) from 3-6pm.

The Soapbox Skillshare series starts up again on June 17 from 6-8 pm with: Embroider Patches and Merit Badges with Soapbox Secretary extraordinaire, fiber artist Johanna Marshall. In this 2-hour workshop you’ll learn to embroider, and make a patch or merit badge of your own. Make fancy stitches in colorful thread on a fabric surface, look at exciting examples of embroidery from the past and present, follow patterns, ask all the questions you want, and take home a DIY kit so you can keep stitching! $15-20 sliding scale, all materials included. Space is limited. RSVP to phillysoapbox@gmail.com.

Johanna Marshall is a fiber artist and art teacher whose life goal is for everyone on the planet to have a working set of domestic arts skills. She states, “No, seriously, I won’t rest til you people can all embroider your own knee patches. I will come back from the grave and haunt you til you can make a decent French knot. So you may as well sign up and get it over with.”

The Soapbox will also be on the road again for Scranton Zine Fest on June 9. Mary and Johanna will be there representing The Soapbox with information, zines, quirky conversation, a zine donation box, and zines for sale. Many of our favorite Philly zine makers will be there, as well as folks from elsewhere in the state. The event is followed by a poetry reading. Visit scrantonzinefest.wordpress.com for more information, and get on the road and come say hi!

Look for news in the next few days about fundraising for our screenprinting studio!
