A Mask of One’s Own
September 10, 2020, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Learn to sew your own face mask by hand and personalize it with imagery or text in this social workshop. This workshop is open to all skill levels, but participants should be able to thread a needle and tie a knot. To make your mask, students need fabric (one cotton t-shirt or piece of cotton fabric of equivalent size), sewing pins, sewing needle, and thread (a basic sewing kit will work). We will embellish with materials of your choice such as embroidery thread and needle, fabric paint and brush, and permanent or fabric markers. This online class requires students to have a device to join the class with reliable internet access.
About The Instructor
Johanna Marshall is a fiber artist and art educator whose work explores layers of idiosyncratic daily experience in thread, paper, and fabric. Her undergraduate research examined modes of transmission in craft education, and she holds an M.Ed from Tyler School of Art. Johanna is an elementary art teacher and former faculty at Fleisher Art Memorial, and her work is currently on exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport.
$15 Community / $30 Cost of Workshop / $45 Sponsor
In an effort to keep workshops accessible to as many as possible, while compensating our instructors fairly and covering Soapbox costs, we’re pleased to offer a sliding scale. Our “Cost of Workshop” rate is the real cost of our workshop, and we need most people to register at this rate to run the workshop. For those who are able, please consider selecting the “Sponsor” rate to allow someone who cannot afford the real cost to participate. If you are someone experiencing hardship, please register at the “Community” rate. In evaluating where you fall on the scale, we ask you to consider the difference between sacrifice (making trade-offs in my discretionary spending) vs. hardship (paying full cost for this workshop prevents me from meeting basic needs). For further guidance and information, visit http://www.phillysoapbox.org/sliding-scale/.
