Learn to make books with multiple signature and exposed spines with the single needle Coptic stitch. This non-adhesive binding is a good foundational stitch that lends itself to further exploration. We will create covers, fold signatures, punch the holes, and sew the book together. Beginners are welcome! With Teresa Silva. $35, discount for members. Registration required: www.phillysoapbox.org/register-for-workshops/
Browse our library holdings and learn about upcoming workshops and volunteer opportunities. Also check our blog’s Featured Zine section to get a preview of some items in our collection, as selected by library volunteers. We welcome visitors during Open Hours to tour the space, ask us questions, and bring us your ideas. Come on over.
ABOUT TERESA, COPTIC BINDING INSTRUCTOR:
After a taste of simple glue based bookbinding in high school, Teresa Silva began to teach herself how to bind books from books she borrowed from the library. After a brief interlude of learning to bind books properly from professionals (but not really becoming better at glue), she began to focus on exposed spine, non-adhesive bindings as well as Japanese stab bindings that can be made using simple tools, all sorts of easily procured materials, and could be sewn almost anywhere.
