Letters for Zora at the Writers Room at the Dornsife Center

October 22, 2016, 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

As part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read, the Writers Room at Drexel’s Dornsife Center is hosting a series of events and workshops dedicated to the work of Zora Neale Hurston.

On October 22, The Soapbox will lead participants in letterpress printing covers for a collaborative zine entitled “Letters for Zora.”

Letterpress printing combines art and writing, using block letter-forms and ink to transfer text with a range of looks to the page. Embracing the spirit of self-publication, we will create bold covers for the collaborative zine Letters for Zora. In this 2 1/2 hour workshop, our group will learn the basics of letterpress printing – setting wood type on a basic table-top press – and everyone will try their hand at printing. By the end of the morning, we will have a stack of hand printed covers. Participants will get a deluxe edition of the zine featuring their hand-printed covers, and their cover design will be used for a fully photocopied version of the design which will be distributed to the community for free.

This workshop is free, but limited to 20 participants. Reserve your spot at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/letters-for-zora-letterpress-workshop-tickets-28442401990.

Want to work on a page for the zine? Check out the “Zines for Zora” drawing and writing workshop on October 4.
