Zines for Survival

October 8, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This is a 2-hour workshop on how to make and organize educational, activist, or resource sharing zines.

This is a 2 hour workshop on how to make and organize educational, activist, or resource sharing zines. In a world of community care and mutual aid, we all have talents and knowledge to share and offer. With the proliferation of Instagram slideshows and digital guides, how do we translate back into the physical realm and organize our skills into zines for distribution? In this discussion and making class, we will learn about information design and simple zine structures. With these skills in our tool belts, we will be equipped to make zines that will support, inform, and help ourselves and our community survive. Supplies for this workshop include a pen or pencil, scissors, cheap paper for zine-making, a needle, and thread. This online class requires students to have a device to join the class with reliable internet access.

About the Instructor

Serena Hocharoen is an Asian-American artist working in installation, print, zines, fiber, sound and ceramics. The objects and spaces she makes are representations of dreams: dreams of remembering comfort, belonging, and transcendence. Originally from the Midwest, she is currently based in Philadelphia and holds an MFA in Printmaking from Tyler School of Art and Architecture.

Cost

$15 Community / $30 Cost of Workshop / $45 Sponsor

In an effort to keep workshops accessible to as many as possible, while compensating our instructors fairly and covering Soapbox costs, we’re pleased to offer a sliding scale. Our “Cost of Workshop” rate is the real cost of our workshop, and we need most people to register at this rate to run the workshop. For those who are able, please consider selecting the “Sponsor” rate to allow someone who cannot afford the real cost to participate. If you are someone experiencing hardship, please register at the “Community” rate. In evaluating where you fall on the scale, we ask you to consider the difference between sacrifice (making trade-offs in my discretionary spending) vs. hardship (paying full cost for this workshop prevents me from meeting basic needs). For further guidance and information, visit http://www.phillysoapbox.org/sliding-scale/.
