In collaboration with the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (some might be familiar with their famed Chinatown Night Market), I had the opportunity to work with a fantastic group of high school students last weekend learning to make zines.
We talked about building community by joining with the people we know already and how to reach out to those we haven’t met yet. We talked about overcoming language barriers through the use of imagery. And of course, we talked about the importance of the physical print in the digital age, how, as an object, it informs our environment and context. Everybody made one page for our zine, and we had a pretty fun time as the students switched between Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, and we discussed high school, the present, the future, and their dreams.
