Introduction to Papercutting
April 24, 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
In this three hour workshop, students will work with renowned Baltimore-Based artist Rosa Leff to learn the art of Papercutting. Leff will guide students through the creation of their own cut paper landscape using X-Acto Knives and a photograph. This introductory course, open to all levels, will leave students with the basic skills to pursue their own papercut work in the future.
About the Instructor
Each of Rosa Leff’s papercuts is cut by hand from a single sheet of paper using a knife. While she is best known for her ability to capture thin tangles of powerlines and intricate brickwork, she also enjoys experimenting with novel media such as paper plates and paper towels. Leff delights in bringing a modern, urban perspective to a traditional folk medium. Leff serves on the board of The Guild of American Papercutters. She has exhibited her work throughout the East Coast and in China. She resides in Baltimore with her husband and chihuahuas, Chalupa and Refrito.
$15 Community / $30 Cost of Workshop / $45 Sponsor
In an effort to keep workshops accessible to as many as possible, while compensating our instructors fairly and covering Soapbox costs, we’re pleased to offer a sliding scale. Our “Cost of Workshop” rate is the real cost of our workshop, and we need most people to register at this rate to run the workshop. For those who are able, please consider selecting the “Sponsor” rate to allow someone who cannot afford the real cost to participate. If you are someone experiencing hardship, please register at the “Community” rate. In evaluating where you fall on the scale, we ask you to consider the difference between sacrifice (making trade-offs in my discretionary spending) vs. hardship (paying full cost for this workshop prevents me from meeting basic needs). For further guidance and information, visit http://www.phillysoapbox.org/sliding-scale/.
