In Their Own Words

“When I joined the soapbox in 2019 as a Keyholder Member I was just looking for somewhere I could letterpress print. I was drawn to the Keyholder membership because of my unpredictable work hours, and being able to go into the studio late at night. The more time I spent printing in the space, the more full of possibilities it felt, and over time I joined the board, moved into a private studio, and started teaching classes. I still work on the letterpress late at night, and I'm still very grateful for this affordable, expansive membership.”

“I'm a printmaker and storyteller, always looking to add to my technical skills as well as different ways to think about and approach imagemaking. I've taken four online workshops at Soapbox so far, and plan to participate in more in person as/when this becomes possible. My experiences in Social Media for Artists, Papermaking at Home, Papercutting, and Digital Perzines have all had some important common elements even as they've offered diverse skill development and inspiration.

When I sign up for a Soapbox class, I know I can expect clear communication ahead of time around preparation to get the most out of the sessions, useful supporting reference materials to keep, a chance to practice the new skills rather than just listening to lectures as well as good access to instructors for questions and help.”

“I first fell in love with Philly through the world of printmaking and zines that I found in Soapbox. The studio and community solidified my desire to move to the city and be part of the art world. Even through the pandemic I’ve had positive experiences with my fellow artists, and the variety of print and bookmaking supplies is quite diverse. I’d recommend Soapbox to anyone who wants to be a part of a greater whole and to be with people who really take care of their space and shared belongings.”
