Join Us in the New Year as Part of Our Board!

The Soapbox: Community Print Shop & Zine Library seeks applications to join our board at an exciting time, as we re-emerge from pandemic operations bigger and better at 4700 Kingsessing Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19143.

Our core team of working board members seeks inquiries from passionate individuals interested in contributing to The Soapbox community. Currently, our board consists of 11 individuals who serve on committees including: Studio, Programming & Library, Fundraising, and Communications. Expertise or desire to get involved in the following areas is especially needed:

  • membership co-coordination;

  • co-coordinating our Fellows work exchange program;

  • external programs coordination (planning workshops for other organizations);

  • fundraising/development or fundraising event coordinator;

  • communications committee member.

Board members lead and carry out ongoing operations while guiding The Soapbox’s long-term mission work. They are enthusiastic ambassadors for The Soapbox, sharing our work with their communities. A love and appreciation of the handmade – specifically book, zine, print, and paper – is helpful to understanding our mission, as is a commitment to community and the power of art to support social justice work.

We welcome and appreciate applications from people of all backgrounds, spanning age, race, class, sexuality, ability, gender, etc. The Soapbox prides itself on welcoming individuals who are new to board service. Statements of Interest will be considered on a rolling basis through January 31. To be considered or open a conversation, please submit a Statement of Interest. To nominate another individual, please complete our Nomination Form by January 15. Nominated individuals will be asked to submit a Statement of Interest. Date and time for an online information session will be added soon. For more about The Soapbox, visit www.phillysoapbox.org or email us with questions at info@phillysoapbox.org.

The Details:

Roles: Board members should anticipate leading activity in their designated area (such as the areas outlined above), and may provide some support as needed on other tasks, e.g. contributing to planning an annual fundraising event, while acting collaboratively to steer the organization. A list of duties for the positions listed above can be found here.

Term: Board terms are for two years and renewable.

Required Meetings: Meetings of the board currently take place the last Monday of alternating months, 6:30 – 8:30pm, via Zoom. Optional collaborative work sessions are scheduled for the months inbetween. Some routine committee meetings are also expected, as well as one annual day-long board retreat each year (typically held on a weekend in the summer).

Requirements:

100% Board Giving. We ask for all board members to support our work through a donation each year at a level that is personally significant – whether that is $1 or $1 million. We expect all board members to contribute to fundraising efforts as an ambassador for The Soapbox.

Working Board. As a small, volunteer run organization, we anticipate that board members will give of their time and expertise outside of board meetings, at a level that accommodates each individual’s interest, availability, and strengths while continuing to support the mission of The Soapbox. Anticipated commitment ranges from 10 to 20 hours per month of work, depending on board member capacity and role.

Benefits: The Soapbox – both the board and the studio and library audience – fosters a rewarding community of creative and dedicated individuals. Board members develop new relationships and shape what takes place at The Soapbox at this exciting time of growth, ensuring its success. Play a role in supporting creativity, preserving craft, and nurturing self-expression in our communities.

Insurance: The Soapbox carries Directors & Officers Liability Insurance.
